Sardinia is undoubtedly the fatherland of this vine that, together with Cannonau, is the most typical expression of its wine production.
Of Spanish origins, it landed to Sardinia through Corsica and Santa Teresa di Gallura in the 19th century.
It is a vine of precocious maturation. In the hottest areas, it is harvested during the first ten days of September, with excellent adaptability to diverse climates and types of soil, good resistance to severe weather conditions and cryptograms.
During the last fifteen years, Vermentino underwent a constant increase of selling and it seems to be far from crisis.
Its spread all around Sardinia gives expressions, not only to its typical quality and typicality, but also to its wines and their strong and unique identity, that is representative of different production areas. Wines based on Vermentino are generally dry white wines, of straw yellow colour, with intense scents of wild and herbaceous flowers and a hint of yellow peach.
At the moment, Vermentino vine is employed for DOCG “Vermentino di Gallura”, and DOC “Vermentino di Sardegna” and “ Alghero Vermentino frizzante”.
