It is a grape variety known since 1780. After unsuccessful trials in other areas of Sardinia, Semidano has been recognized as the representative grape variety of Mogoro area and labelled DOC wine. It is a low-yielding grape variety with small and closely-knit grape clusters somewhat resistant to cryptograms. It is sometimes confused with Naragus for its similar vegetative appearance and particularly for the shape of its seeds and leaves. Grapes ripening takes place during the first ten days of September. In late harvesting, from the middle of October, Semidano makes either white wines of great texture and complexity or amazing sweet wines.

Il SEMIDANO

Characteristics and place of origins

Semidano is an old and noble vine with white berries, common in Sardinia but of doubtful origins. It was probably entered through Kalaris and Nora old harbours in ancient times, when Phoenicians and Romans, spreading out current Campidano and particularly Cagliaritano, shared with Greece not only the island, but also the wine trade. For long time, it has been a very common vine in the area of Sardinia, particularly employed to gentle Nuragus. The phylloxera pest, spread during the 19th century, sharply reduced the agricultural area dedicated to this vine, that is recognized as one of the frailest and most damaged spice of vine.

In 1996, its importance was acknowledged by the Ministero delle Politiche Agricole e Forestali with the establishment of DOC Sardegna Semidano and its respective area Mogoro, deeply involved in the production of this valuable wine.

Most of the 30 argillaceous-calcareous hectares, cultivated with Semidano and located in hills at 350-450 meter above sea level currently, belong to the members of Mogoro winery. That is why it cannot be recognized as DOC monoaziendale.
