The national and international increase in value of Vernaccia di Oristano is certainly derived from Cantina della Vernaccia established in 1953. Through its establishment, the artisan production – unable to preserve the quality of the product and its organoleptic properties – came to be replaced by a production where the traditional methods is flanked to the use of leading systems and techniques. Essential for the acquisition of new markets.
The cooperative, placed in the district of Oristano, produces not only Vernaccia D.O.C. Riserva, but also other varieties of D.O.C wines, like Vermentino di Sardegna, Cannonau di Sardegna, Monica di Sardegna, and the I.G.T. (Regional Geographic Indication) wines Nieddera and Terresinis, the lattest produced through fermentation of Vernaccia vine in barriques.
The pedoclimate conditions are related to the characteristics of the soil, derived from the floods of the river Tirso, to the warm summer climate, which favours the ripening of grapes, and generally mild winters, which create the ideal condition for the production of the most fine wines.
DOC Vernaccia di Oristano, cult wine of the Sardinian wine tradition, has an extent of cultivated land of around 400 hectares. It is common in a quite limited area of Bassa Valle del Tirso, in Oristano province, trained with head-training system, and an average yield per hectare of 33 quintal.
It has small clusters, of cylinder- or cylinder-cone-shape. Its grapes are small and round, of golden colour, with a very thin and pruinose skin. It’s juice is particularly sweet. Microclimate and the special geologic composition of Bassa Valle del fiume Tirso alluvial soils give great expression to this wine. Numerous archaeological finds retrieved in the Phoenician town of Tharros, in Sinis peninsula, show the very old origins of this vine. In the 14th century, Queen Eleonora d’Arborea made its cultivation longer and more intense by means of special rules. According to the most reliable hypothesis, the name of this vine has Roman origins, coming from “vernacular” (meaning native grapes), since it was already known during Roman period. The peculiar feature of this wine is represented by the process of refining, carried out by means of flor yeasts. In the international scene, they contribute to place this wine next to Jerez and Montilla-Moriles from Andalusia and Vin Jaune from Jura.
