Giuseppe GABBAS farm covers about 30 hectares. Among them, 20 hectares are cultivated with grapes, 5 with olive trees. They are to be found at an altitude from 240 to 350 metre above sea level, in a valley at the foot of Supramonte, in the heart of Sardinia, 10 km far from Nuoro (provincial capital in Barbagia region).

Particularly, the climate of this region, mitigated by winds coming from the sea (circa 20 km far), and the proximity of mountains provide a good temperature range, which has positive effects on grapes colour and aroma.

This small but dynamic business reality, in a territory particularly devoted to grapes cultivation, gives great expression of its activity, giving its wines traits of elegancy and territoriality, difficult to be found elsewhere.

Nuoro and Oliena territory

Barbaga, land of mountains and shepherds, is divided into Barbagia of Ollolai (between Nuoro and Fonni, to the north of Gennargentu), of Belvì (between Laconi and Aritzo), of Sèulo (extended into Campidano), and of Mandrolisai, in the north-west side. Its name derives from Latin Barbària (barbarians), and was assigned from Romans to local people, because of their bashful and proud character, that has never been completely subdued.

For the harshness of its territory, plunged in Gennargentu and Supramonte area, Barbagia has always lived isolated. This aspect has contributed to shape local people’s reserved attitude, enabling them to preserve their traditions, culture and language (the latest is regarded as the purest Sardinian spoken language among the others).

Vineyards

Sufficiently permeable, deep soils of granitic origins partially maintain their humidity even during long dry spells. This favours the growing of an ecosystem perfect for grapes; in addition, it reduces anti-parasite treatments, carried out with traditional products.

Implantations rationality and their extension give the possibility to carry out a high quality wine-growing, based on such cultivation principles as short pruning, and constant yields, which aim to enhance grapes varietal properties.

The most cultivated vine is Cannonau, to which have been added more native varieties, selected among the most interesting in the generous Sardinian scene.

Dule, Cannonau di Sardegna Doc, belongs to the Sardinian wines “The Magnificent 11”, awarded “Three Glasses” in the guideline Gambero Rosso. Yet, Giuseppe Gabbas from Nuoro doesn’t thrill: “Today, there is a sort of awards inflation”. His disillusionment shows a harsh and genuine temperament, that sounds of Barbagia.

CANNONAU

Characteristics and place of origin

Currently, Cannonau is the most common red wine in Sardinia (around 28% of wine production).

Despite its inclination for warm climate, it has a good tolerance to cold winters and seaside winds.

This wine is ruby red in colour, with garnet red highlights. It has an intense aroma of wild berries and spices, and tastes dry and sapid.

From Cannonau grapes mainly derives the DOC Cannonau di Sardegna wine, red or rosè, made with at least 90% of Cannonau grapes. Its ageing lasts at least a year and takes place in oak or chestnut barrels.
